The Hanging Church, referred to as the Suspended Church, got its name since it was established on the southern gate of the Roman Fortress. It is a unique church in Old Cairo, notable for its roof, which is shaped like the Ark of Noah. It served as the residence of the Coptic Patriarch from the 7th to the 13th centuries.
Dating back to the 9th century, the Ben Ezra Synagogue occupies the shell of a 4th-century Christian church. It is believed to be the site where the prophet Jeremiah gathered all the Jews after the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in the 6th century by Nebuchadnezzar. Restored in the 12th century, it holds secrets and mysteries of the North African Jewish community from the 11th to the 13th centuries.
Enjoy a lunch meal at a wonderful local restaurant before continuing your day tour.
Abu Serga Church is believed to be built on the spot where the Holy Family, including Mary, Jesus Christ, and Joseph, rested after their journey into Egypt. This church has great historical importance, with many patriarchs of the Coptic Church being erected there.
The Virgin Mary Church, located in Haret Zuweila, is believed to be the oldest in the area, built during the 10th century, although some writings suggest it dates to the 12th century at the consecration of the New Cairo Bishop. It served as the seat of the Orthodox Pope of Alexandria from 1400 AD to 1520 AD.
